Activities of CARE T in Revival of Coastal Ecology
1. Man-made Sand Dune Creation for Coastal Water Conservation
Significance of sand dune: It serves as a natural resilient and eco-friendly barrier to the destructive forces of winds and waves.
Objectives:
- To prevent sea water intrusion to mitigate climate change impact
- To protect coastal people and ecology from natural disasters like Tsunami
Methodology adopted:
- Participatory discussions with the traditional elderly fisher folk who have indigenous knowledge in understanding the sea wave movements and the pattern of wind flow in various seasons
- Collecting and testing of water samples from 12 wells located in and around the sand dune before and after to correlate between the quality of the water scientifically
- Planting of 300 trees and other sand dune flora species to cover the slopes and the top area of the sand dune
Outcomes of the activity:
- The sand dune created is 90 meters long and 8 meters wide with the height of 2 meters
- It has become a model sand dune for the coastal villages
2. Coastal Ecological Remediation
Traditional coastal tree plant species are nurtured, distributed and planted along the coast by CARE T as an effort.
3. Protection of Coastal Ecology
Participants: school students from coastal villages
Objectives: To enlighten the students on the need for conservation of the oceans and the protection of the coastal ecology
Outcomes of the activity:
- The students realized the need for prevention of dumping the plastic wastes on the sea shore
- They got involved in removing plastic wastes on the sea shore as a part of their eco club activities
- Inspired by CARE T, they pledged for the revival of coastal ecology
